Aluminum RTM mold for ballistic testing.

Manufacture of a machined aluminum mold for producing, by RTM (Resin Transfer Molding), composite test specimens and structural components intended for ballistic testing in the defense sector.

The assignment

A tool that allows no deviations.

In a ballistic test, every specimen has to be identical to the previous one: if the thickness or geometry changes, the result changes. That is why the mold defines the quality of the entire test.

We designed and machined the tool to ensure the geometry, dimensional tolerances and surface finish required to obtain repeatable test specimens and structural components.

How we did it

From tool design to a mold ready for injection.

01 · Design

RTM tooling

We designed the closed mold for resin injection, starting from the geometry, tolerances and finish the test specimens demand.

02 · Machining

CNC-machined aluminum

We machined the mold from aluminum on our CNC machining centers: a rigid, stable material that can be machined with high precision.

03 · Finish

A surface that transfers

In RTM, the mold surface is replicated on the part, on both faces. The surface finish of the tool is part of the result.

Your project

Need a mold for RTM, infusion or prepreg?

We design and machine composite molds and tooling in aluminum, steel or tooling board, and deliver them measured. If you prefer, we can also manufacture the parts.

FAQ

About this project.

What is RTM?

RTM (Resin Transfer Molding) is a closed-mold composite manufacturing process: the fibers are placed dry in the mold and the resin is injected under pressure until it impregnates them. It produces parts with a good finish on both faces and controlled thicknesses.

Why an aluminum mold for RTM?

Because the mold has to be rigid, sealed and stable to withstand pressure injection, and aluminum can be machined with high precision and a good surface finish, which transfers directly to the part.

Do you work for the defense sector?

Yes. We machine molds and tooling for defense projects, with the confidentiality they require.
